What is Journalism?

What is journalism? and who are journalists? These questions have varying answers ranging from broad to very precise. The past couple of classes we have been discussing just that... what makes up a journalist and what constitutes as journalism. So after reading several chapters and ideas here are my thoughts.
What is journalism?
One book suggested that journalism is a form of writing that tells people about things that have really happened, that they may or may not have already heard.
In a nut shell, journalism is there to inform the public about what is going on in the world around them. Journalism is there to give a voice to the voiceless, to be a watchdog on corruption and to report the facts. Journalism takes on many forms, but only when it comes from a reliable source can it be called real journalism.

Who are journalist?
Journalism is to journalist like pies are to bakers. Journalist write journalism! Easy right? Right! All you have to do is be unbiased, moral, honest, accurate, objective, etc. Journalist have the big responsibility to report or disseminate the news to an audience or readers. News needs to be accurate, but tasteful. Often I've seen sad and horrible stories that are considered newsworthy. A journalist takes those awful stories and tells them in a tasteful way.
A journalist also needs to be able to explain complex concepts and make them clear and understandable for everyone.
Journalist have big jobs!! And they are very important. Journalism can be used for both good and evil.... and it's the journalist job to choose which direction they want to go... hopefully good.

  1. Everyday I'm in the major I learn more and more how big a journalists job is. There are so many facets of journalism, and they all play a function in some way. Growing up I wanted to be a reporter because I wanted to tell stories, but it wasn't until I was older that I realized how much journalists can impact our society. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. I just hope I can handle it.
